How to Start Martial Arts: Essential Tips for Beginners
The first time many of us stepped onto the mat . . .
We didn’t feel strong.
We didn’t feel confident.
We didn’t feel ready.
We felt unsure.
And over the last 30 years of teaching at Kimling’s Academy of Martial Arts, we’ve seen that same look walk through our doors hundreds of times.
School-aged kids. Grown men. Professional women. Parents. Business owners. People in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 80s.
They all walk in thinking the same thing:
“I should’ve started this years ago.”
Maybe that’s you.
Maybe you’ve been researching. Watching videos. Thinking about it quietly. But there’s a voice in your head saying:
What if I’m too out of shape?
What if I look foolish?
What if I’m too old?
Let us tell you something we’ve learned.
The hardest part of martial arts isn’t the training.
It’s walking through the door that first time.
Once you do that, everything changes.
If you’re still wondering whether martial arts is even worth starting at this stage of life, we broke down exactly how training builds confidence, discipline, and mental strength in this article.
But if you’re ready to understand how to actually begin, this guide will walk you through it step by step.
Why Starting Martial Arts Feels Intimidating And Why That’s Normal
Walking into a martial arts school can feel overwhelming.
You imagine black belts flying across the room. You picture being the only beginner. You worry about your flexibility, your coordination, your stamina.
But the intimidation isn’t physical.
It’s psychological.
You’re not afraid of getting hit.
You’re afraid of looking awkward.
You’re afraid of failing in front of strangers.
Every black belt you see once felt exactly the same way.
Being a beginner isn’t a weakness. It’s a starting point.
And the nervousness you feel? …That’s growth trying to happen.

Is Martial Arts Good for Beginners With No Experience
Yes.
Most of our adult students start with zero experience. They haven’t trained before. They haven’t been consistent in years. Some haven’t exercised regularly at all.
That’s not a problem.
In fact, beginners often progress faster because they’re open to learning.
You don’t need to get in shape first.
Martial arts is how you get in shape.
We start with fundamentals:
Balance
Posture
Breathing
Basic movement
Controlled drills
You won’t be thrown into sparring on day one. You won’t be asked to perform.
You’ll be guided.
Am I Too Old to Start Martial Arts?
If you’re between your 30s and 80s, you are not too old.
You’re just early in a new chapter.
Adults often train with more focus and discipline than younger students. They show up consistently. They listen. They apply corrections.
Martial arts at this stage of life is about:
Mobility
Joint stability
Core strength
Balance
Stress relief
We’ve watched so many adults improve posture in months. We’ve seen students regain flexibility they thought was gone.
The body adapts when you train intelligently.
And that’s exactly how we structure our beginner program.

What Is the Best Martial Art for Beginners?
There isn’t one perfect style.
There’s the right fit for you.
Some students want practical self-defense. Some want conditioning. Some want structure and discipline. Some want all of it.
But here’s what matters more than style.
Environment.
You can train the most effective system in the world, but if the culture is ego-driven or intimidating, you won’t stay.
At Kimling’s, everything is built around family and community. You feel it the moment you walk in.
You’re welcomed.
You’re supported.
You’re coached.

Consistency beats style.
Every time.
What Should I Expect in My First Martial Arts Class?
Most fear comes from not knowing what will happen.
Your first martial arts class begins with a structured warm-up. Nothing extreme. Just controlled movement to prepare your body.
Then we introduce fundamentals.
Basic stances.
Introductory strikes.
Foundational self-defense movements.
You won’t spar on day one.
You won’t be embarrassed.
You’ll learn.
You may feel slightly awkward. That’s normal.
You may feel sore the next day. That’s normal too.
But you’ll also feel accomplished.

How Often Should Beginners Train?
You don’t need to train every day.
Two consistent sessions per week is powerful.
Our beginner martial arts class runs 45 minutes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 7:15pm.
Mondays focus on fundamentals. Forms. Basics. Body mechanics. Teaching your body how to move properly. Building muscle memory so when it’s time to defend yourself, you don’t freeze.
Wednesdays are self-defense training with Master Rodriguez.
Side Note: He says something we all stand by . . . If someone puts their hands on you without permission, it’s your job to defend yourself and do what it takes to do so.
Wednesday training focuses on practical application. Real-world awareness. Controlled, structured drills that build confidence.
Monday builds mechanics.
Wednesday builds application.
Together, they build belief.

How to Choose the Right Martial Arts School
Choosing the right school isn’t about price alone.
It’s about culture.
At Kimling’s, we are built around family and community. From the moment you walk through the door, you feel it.
Students know each other. Instructors know your name. There’s discipline and structure, but also encouragement and respect.
Adults don’t quit because training is too hard.
They quit because they don’t feel like they belong.
Belonging matters.

The Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make
Trying to be perfect too quickly.
Comparing themselves to others.
Training too hard too fast.
Quitting before the shift happens.
Growth feels uncomfortable before it feels empowering.
Stick with it long enough to see the shift.
What Happens If You Stick With It
Your posture improves.
Your endurance increases.
Your stress decreases.
Your confidence grows.
If you want a realistic look at what 90 days of consistent training can do for your body and mindset, we break that down step by step here.
Very few adults regret starting martial arts.
Many regret waiting.
